Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work at a middle school (grades 6-8) as a Speech-Language Pathologist and provide therapy to 32 amazing students. They work on improving their fluency, grammar, vocabulary, literacy, writing, and pragmatic (social) skills.
My students are from a low-income neighborhood with limited resources and parental support.
My primary goal is to create a multi-sensory, judgment-free environment where students are encouraged to take the skills they learn with me outside to the "real world." I strive to ensure my students become tolerant, productive and, most importantly, kind members of society.
My Project
I regularly use my personal printer at home to create colorful and interactive learning material. However, color ink for standard printers runs out very quickly and is extremely expensive. Constantly having to buy color ink has taken a toll on my finances and severely limited the amount of quality resources I can supply for their benefit. Fortunately, Epson recently released the EcoTank, which utilizes much less ink yet produces far more pages per cartridge. This groundbreaking device would allow my students to print individual projects and develop an understanding of software (e.g. Word and PowerPoint) that is essential for becoming college and career-ready.
Today’s Common Core curriculum places high demands when it comes to language comprehension, expression and problem-solving skills.
Students with special needs and different learning styles require extra support to fulfill what is expected of them. An iPad would grant these students access to thousands of educational resources/apps capable of helping them complete assignments in a more engaging manner. Researching information on an iPad also makes students more independent and responsible in general. Additional benefits of this device include the abilities to self-check work and peer edit the work of other classmates. Students are more eager to participate in a lesson and assist their peers when they know they will be able to use an iPad, regardless of the topic of the lesson. The opportunity to use an iPad would be a wonderful source of positive reinforcement for good, improved, and expected school behavior.
As a Speech Pathologist, I seek to provide the most effective, enjoyable and evidence-based methods of therapy. An EcoTank and iPad will allow me to not only collect more accurate data on student performance and growth but also make the time shared with my students more memorable.
