My Students

Dribbling, passing, or shooting seem foreign to my students. Unfortunately, my students do not know how to properly play basketball, so I want to expand their sports horizon and teach them how to bounce, pass, and shoot a ball successfully.

I am a fifth grade English Language Development teacher with 35 students, where English is their second language.

Majority of my Chinese and Latino students do not speak English at home, so the classroom is their primary source in learning to read, write and speak English. I try to bring so much of the outside world to the classroom, making learning fun and engaging. Many students do not get to play outside of their homes, the streets are busy with traffic congestion and people. The only outdoor activity they may get are through recesses, and that's only 20 minutes long. However, the school's yard is so small for 115 total fifth graders, that students are not able to run around. The closest park, with grass and a field to play, is about 3 or miles away. As a result, many of my students are not athletic and do not know how to handle a ball correctly.

My Project

As I watch my students play at recess, I notice that many lack the skill needed in the sport to be successful. I see how they play "jungle ball" verses basketball. Students are hitting each other, grabbing the ball, shooting without jumping and not abiding to the court's lines. I cringe as I watch them improperly play. I grew up playing basketball and realized that basketball taught me so much, team work, balance, physical activity and being proud of myself. I want to share my personal experience with my students. I want to teach them how to bounce a ball and not slam on the ball, shoot with an arch and not a bullet shot, pass a ball and not throw the ball. With 24 basketballs, I can teach the students technic and skills, needed to learn to play basketball properly. We would have enough balls that only partners of 2 can pass to each other, practice shooting, and drills. Students would be constantly engaged because everyone is learning at the same time.

Physical Education is always lacked in elementary classrooms, but I see how it's important for students to be active and aware of their body.

I want to teach my students beyond reading and math, and into sport's skills. I want my students to be comfortable with a ball verses running away, and this is possible if they are taught how to play.
