Mrs. Rizzo from Chicago IL is requesting musical instruments through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need these ukuleles to build their ability to persist in a challenge, to learn to think abstractly, and to enjoy the self-esteem that comes from creating a beautiful sound.

My students are vibrant, curious, and positive. Like almost all children, they love to engage in discussions and they have a passion for learning about the world. However, many of them are living the lives of at risk youth, meaning they struggle to survive through poverty, violence, and other factors that are not good for children. This sometimes means a lack of exposure to the richness of human experience communicated through art.
"If children hear fine music from the day of their birth and learn to play it, they develop sensitivity, discipline and endurance.
They get a beautiful heart." -Shinichi Suzuki
A summer music program will be a brilliant way to address skill deficits brought on by poverty and its attendant harms. With these instruments my students can experience the joy and skill attainment they deserve. They can learn how to play an uplifting and fun yet accessible instrument, the ukulele. Along the way to mastery, they will develop the competencies of discipline, endurance and persistence that are so necessary to success but rarely developed in school.
This project will make a huge difference in my students' lives through outward and inner developmental experiences. Outwardly, they will learn to play happy music on a happy instrument, a ukulele, and prepare to perform in a show, which builds collaboration and self esteem. The inner development will happen when they persist in a challenge, regulate their own emotions in the face of set backs and think abstractly in terms of notes, rhythm, and harmony.
"Ukuleles will get you through times with no money better than money will get you through time with no ukulele." -AnonymousThis quote says it all! Learning to play music will provide life long competencies and joy in that one is forever changed by the internalization of the abstract thinking music develops.
