I Play Just What I Feel

Help me give my students six keyboards, saxophone reeds and sanitizing spray so they can experience improvising in a jazz style.

My Project

The saxophone is such an expressive instrument. We have access to an alto saxophone: with these reeds and sanitizing spray, everyone can get a chance to play.

First, students will learn to play and arpeggiate a F major 7 chord on the keyboard with a simple song titled 'FACE.'

Then, I will model playing the saxophone along with the students' playing of the keyboard accompaniment. Then, I will teach the students a few notes that will 'fit' with that chord on the alto saxophone, and, then, voila! Our students will be improvising and authentically engaging with jazz music and instruments.

Thank you for helping me bring jazz chords and saxophone playing to deserving students in a historically-underfunded school.
