My Students
I have a wonderful group of students in a Title I school. Most of my students are native Spanish speakers and spend half of the day in a Spanish classroom and the other half of the day in an English classroom (my classroom) making them fully bilingual in Spanish and English by ninth grade.
All of my students come from extremely low socioeconomic backgrounds.
All of my students are receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Although their parents work a lot to make ends meet, they are still very involved in their child's education because they know that education = success.
My students are a family. They go through the same struggles and face very similar challenges. Most of them have been together since kindergarten and will continue together until high school graduation because of the way our school's dual immersion is set up. My students are "my kids," and I want to do anything and everything I can to help them be successful.
My Project
My students need basic hygiene products to take home. All of my students come from very low income families. Many of them have multiple brothers and sisters. Their parents work all day and support their students by simply making sure that they are at school each day. However, my students need basic hygiene items to take care of themselves at home.
I didn't realize how many basic items my students are lacking until our school social worker and I did a lesson on hygiene this week.
We ran out of sample size products to hand out to my students. I had 30 students who didn't even get to take home basic things like toothpaste, floss, soap, a washcloth, and a toothbrush. We need these products to ensure that they are getting their basic needs met at home.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
