My Students
My students do not have access to a large number of popular new books like "Holes". We have curriculum text that provides only excerpts of new books. However, these excerpts only leave them craving more.
My students are 5th and 6th graders who are quickly becoming life long readers.
Our school is located in an economically depressed area of Maryland and lacks the funding for basic classroom necessities. We are constantly relying on the kindness of strangers to provide us the supplies we need for a successful school year.
My Project
Having a classroom set of the book "Holes" and the audio companion will allow my students to learn and practice reading strategies while at the same time renew their love for reading. We will be setting aside time every day to read and discuss the story for at least 10 minutes. This time will allow students to understand that we can read for pleasure and not just to pass a standardized state test.
