My students need basic math supplies such as 35 quality compasses, folders, pencils, pens, 34 rulers, dry erase markers, post-it notes, erasers, a stapler, and markers to enrich and motivate their learning of key geometry concepts.
I teach mathematics in an inner-city public high school in which some students are unable to access the very basic supplies they need to fully flourish in mathematics. They are creative students and still try to reach their fullest potential despite the lack of quality resources.
Remember how new school supplies could motivate you to work harder, write neater in mathematics and pay attention to even the smallest details in your work?
My students are easily excited to borrow basic supplies from me, like mechanical pencils and the "good-eraser-that-doesn't-smudge". When given these supplies, they become more meticulous in their work and thrive on making perfect diagrams to accompany their problem solving.
I recall a few days ago, while starting a lesson on angles formed by chords and secants of a circle, there was a hush in the room as students borrowed each others' rulers and Blistex (to use as a perfect circle) to sketch a complicated diagram. My students crave structure as it helps to organize their problem solving strategies, but they are limited by not having certain resources available.
They don't shy away from complex circle geometry questions and understand the value of grappling with new concepts in order to discover and develop key ideas.
My Project
The majority of my students in geometry this year are juniors with varying skill levels. It can be extremely frustrating and discouraging to construct an angle bisector with a compass and straightedge, only to realize that the construction is inaccurate because of a flimsy compass and not having a ruler. I know that these students can become extremely excited about mathematics and empowered if given the proper resources.
I have requested basic math supplies such as a class set of quality compasses and rulers, some folders, pencils, pens, dry erase markers,post-it notes, erasers, a stapler, and markers to enrich and motivate their learning of key geometry concepts. I want all my students to experience mathematics with the right tools, and for them to really enjoy the work.
Colored markers will allow my students to proudly display and take ownership of their work. Compasses and rulers will allow them to understand concepts such as locus, constructions, and circle geometry. Folders, pens, and pencils will help them to effectively process new information and to keep organized.
With your generous donation, you will allow my students to have access to basic supplies that every student should have.
This project will make my students more engaged in mathematics and encourage them to take pride in their work.
As these students are nearing their college career, your donation would help build robust foundational skills in mathematics that they will take with them at the university level.
