In working with my English Language Learners, I often have a hard time getting them to get excited about writing. However, when they have the opportunity to write words or sentences on the classroom whiteboard, they volunteer to participate and ask to participate in class.
The EL students hesitate to write on paper because they do not want to see their mistakes corrected by peers/teachers and they find it difficult to "start over" by having to erase or cross out messages.
Being able to use a whiteboard where they can sound out letters and write out sentences that can be corrected easily is motivation for the students to try to write and not worry about mistakes. The classroom whiteboard is limited in space, so having the resources available to give to each student in class will help all of us achieve the goal of learning to write and have fun!
