This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students love to write! We work in an inner-city school and have 4 first grade classes who are learning Spanish, Chinese and English. Most students qualify for free and reduced lunch and are from loving and supportive families.
First grade students need to draw a picture first and then write about their picture. This approach really helps our students whose first language is not English. At the same time, they have to be aware of letter formation so that their stories are legible.
Our first graders will benefit from the journals that have colored lines to write in with a space above for a picture. The lines are red at the bottom signifying to the students to stop there. There are also lines on the other side for students who want to write more. We need 320 journals for 4 first grade classes (80 students). Students go through one journal per quarter, resulting in 4 journals per student.
In all other grades we can make our own journals for the students or use inexpensive ones. However, first grade needs the colored lines which are too expensive to reproduce. Getting journals already made is our most cost-effective option. Your help with ensure that our first grade students continue to write wonderful stories that support their pictures and also have good handwriting.
