This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"Whatever you are, be a good one." - Abraham Lincoln. My students are kindergartners, first graders, second graders, and third graders in a low-income, inner-city school. They are students and they are good ones. Our classroom is a self-contained Autism classroom consisting of 9 students, 1 classroom teacher, 2 instructional assistants, and 1 one-on-one assistant.
In our classroom, we foster a love for learning, growth, and peace.
My students arrive at school ready to learn, to sing, to laugh, to read and to play! Our classroom is filled with the joy of learning and inquisition. We are learning to be members of a peaceful and loving community.
My Project
My school and my classroom have a large number of students who are English as a second language learners and who primarily speak Spanish at home. My students love books, whether they are reading yet or not. Having familiar stories such as "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" and "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle available in Spanish will help my Spanish speaking students increase their reading skills and further their understanding of the stories.
Books written in Spanish or in both Spanish and English are not always easy to come by.
My students would benefit from the high interest books like "Green Eggs and Ham" by Dr. Seuss being available in Spanish. Having these books easily available for my students will help them increase their love for reading and learning. Books like "See and Say: A Picture Book in Four Languages" by Antonio Frasconi will peak student interest, help them learn vocabulary, and increase their understanding of language. I hope you choose to donate to this project, to help bridge the gap for ESL students, and to improve literacy!
