This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The items that I am requesting will benefit many of my students. I work with kindergarten through 5th grade along with newcomers. The items I requested will help engage the students and give them a chance to apply what they have been learning through the games and activities that I have requested.
With my newcomers, we play many games and do art activities which helps to create a positive learning environment.
These activities will encourage my students and help them to become better acclimated with the new culture that they are in.
My goal is to help the newcomers adapt to the new culture and help them acquire the new language with engaging activities. Being a new student is overwhelming, but can you imagine the added fear and anxiety that goes with being an English language learner? These items will help us break the language barrier while having fun. When fun is taking place, it's more likely that students will retain the information that is being taught.
In addition, I requested some phonics material and books to reinforce the skills that I have been teaching and will be teaching later in the school year. My intervention groups consist of mostly ELL students who need a little bit more intense instruction to learn to read.
The students at our school are joy to teach. I love that they love to learn and are happy to be at school. The students who live in this area come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and, oftentimes, trauma that is so severe that their learning is significantly impacted when they arrive at school. These materials and games would be greatly appreciated and bring joy to many of the students as they continue their education journey with me!
