Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I work with a targeted group of disadvantaged minority students to provide support, guidance, resources, and tutorials to ensure they pass all of their classes to be eligible to attend a university. I will be teaching an enrichment math course and a credit recovery math course, for students who were not successful in their previous math course, and want my students to have a positive learning experience. Although I am a math teacher and math is my main focus, I provide academic support to these students in all areas.

I believe that students thrive in a learning environment that is neat and organized and in which they feel comfortable, valued, inspired, and motivated to learn.

School is my home away from home and I believe that is the same for students. In fact, school may feel like a safer space and place of comfort for many students. For this reason, I try to create a welcoming learning environment for them.

Next year, I am being moved to a different classroom that is old and has been used for storage for years and actually has no storage. It is a huge downgrade from the new classroom I was in this year with built-in cabinets and new furniture. I will have the same students next year, plus a new cohort. My classroom decor and bulletin boards usually focus on social emotional well-being, school pride, and character building rather than being content specific. I want to make sure that my scholars feel valued and important and one way is to make their learning space nice, neat, organized, and visually appealing to them.
