My Students

My class is comprised of students from four rural Maine towns. Our school district is in a very low socio-economic region. We have lost much of our industry over the last ten years, from the railroad to dexter shoe. As a result of the closure of these businesses many of our parents have lost their jobs and are currently working at minimum wage. As a result, most of our families are living below the poverty level.

Due to the aforementioned poverty level, our district is very limited in funding which in turn translates to a small amount of money budgeted for our physical education classes and related sports activities.

We work hard to make kids learn that learning through activities is important.

My Project

My students want to improve their personal fitness through a Tabata unit in Physical Education. Stationary bicycles will be just one part of the multiple stations that students will complete during class. Students will be using the stationary bicycles to hit their target heart rate. This equipment will help my students improve their endurance.

During the personal fitness unit students will be learning important life long fitness habits.

The stationary bicycles will give my students and opportunity to recognize resources available to them long after they leave my gymnasium. Hoping to level the playing field for my students that may not have access to this equipment.
