My Students

"Ms. Bell, you actually have a fun library. I like to read the books here. Will it be like this in fourth grade?" Hearing those words has given me motivation to keep my classroom library up to date with books that are hand selected from the Association for Library Service to Children's (ALSC) list.

These kids that I teach are curious, innovative learners that explore many topics.

They enjoy fiction and non-fiction in many formats. My students are currently enrolled in a Title I school with over 400 similar peers. Most of these students understand they are living in poverty and worry about their parents financial burdens. Providing students many of the basic supplies comes out of my own pocket. An entire classroom library is out of the question when students come to school without pencils to write with.

My Project

As of January 2014, some 76% of American adults ages 18 and older said that they read at least one book in the past year. This is a devastating statistic. I want my students to change their own projected statistic. I am requesting 50 chapter books, across reading levels and interests for students to read starting on the first day of school. Currently my classroom library is leveled so that students are able to choose a text at their independent reading level. They will be learning the skills to choose a book of high interest at their reading level. This means that they will learn these skills at the beginning of the year in order to choose books that will help improve their overall reading ability as well as increase their motivation for reading for pleasure.

This donation will allow my students a variety of texts to engage in to increase their overall reading ability as well as their motivation to read for pleasure.

These texts were hand selected and most published from 2010 - 2015. With a variety of texts, each student will have a loved book from the library to read starting on the first day of school.
