My kindergarten students come from a variety of backgrounds, many from low-income households, our school being located in a high poverty district. However, each and every day, I get to see 14 smiling faces walk down the hall to my classroom, eager and ready to learn. In return, I want to do everything I possibly can to help these children become successful this year and down the road.
The students in my class are enthusiastic to learn new things every day they come to school.
They love reading, they love to move around, and they love being part of our classroom community. We call ourselves the "flock of flamingos" because flamingos tend to represent confidence and I truly feel that all kids should have that confidence, both socially and academically, while at school.
My Project
There is a great deal of research, showing how beneficial flexible seating is to all students. In order for students to learn, they should be provided with a comfortable learning environment. The majority of students cannot focus for extended periods of time sitting in a chair at a desk or table. Therefore, this year I have moved toward flexible seating options in my Kindergarten classroom.
Unfortunately, this gets expensive.
I am hoping to give my students more options of where they are able to work, in order to increase their focus and engagement.
At this time, I have a few yoga balls, cushioned milk crates, risers to provide a standing table at which they can work, and soft mats to work on the floor. I have seen a huge increase in my students' ability to work independently and remain on task and focused. For this reason, I am hoping to give them more tools to help them continue to be the hardworking kiddos I have seen so far. The stools will be another option at my raised table for those students who choose to work there. This way, they have the option to work standing up, providing the movement they need, or sitting on a padded stool with the comfort of a raised work space. The bungee chairs I am asking for would be a great addition to my reading nook, as a place for students to read comfortably, while giving them an opportunity to “fidget” and remain mobile while doing so. I know my students will not only enjoy, but benefit from these added options. Thank you in advance for your help!
