I Like to Move It, Move It! Stability Balls Replace Chairs

My students need 23 stability balls to increase attention spans, strengthen core muscles, provide postural control, and create movement breaks without leaving the classroom.

My Students

"An active mind cannot exist in an inactive body." ~ General George S. Patton. My third grade students are very energetic. They love to learn and they love to MOVE! My goal is to provide opportunities for both, simultaneously!

I have 22 students in a general education setting whose abilities range from kindergarten to 8th grade.

It is my job as their teacher to meet the needs of all of these students under one roof. This year has been a particular challenge because this group of kids LOVES to talk, LOVES to move, and they LOVE to learn. The problem is that their love for movement (ultimately avoidance of quiet work) is hindering their ability to learn to the great capacity each has and deserves. I know stability balls will help my students reach their educational goals by providing an opportunity to "get the wiggles out" in a productive way.

My Project

Each student in my classroom will benefit from using a stability ball, replacing their current stationary chairs. Providing the opportunities for movement throughout their learning day will increase their ability to pay attention, thus strengthening their stamina. They will also gain "breaks" without having to leave the room! The health of my students will improve by encouraging activity throughout their day, as well as strengthening core muscles. Students will have a greater capacity to learn more effectively by sensory stimulation and an outlet for energy.

The addition of stability balls to our classroom will make a difference in the lives of my students.

They will feel a direct impact to greater health, as well as reap the benefits of kinesthetic learning. They will help with tolerance and participation of extended learning activities, reading, writing and math activities.
