I am proud to teach 9th and 12th grade English at my high school alma mater. This has been a true full-circle moment for me as I give back to the community that has shaped the woman and educator that I have become.
The majority of my students come from low-income households but that does not diminish their capacity for greatness.
Our school is well-known for its athleticism, creativity, and academics. Although we are located in the heart of the inner city, we are truly an unstoppaBULL community, and each year our students consistently overcome the odds and rise above expectations.
My goal as an educator is to ensure that I am able to foster and develop the flame within each of them as they embark on this new journey and prepare for adulthood. My classroom is their gateway to deeper knowledge, greater understanding, and a more fulfilled life!
My Project
I had cultivated a pretty nice classroom library over the first 5 years of my teaching career. My students enjoyed checking out novels from our class library and diving into the amazing book offerings there. Unfortunately, my resignation from my last school prompted the administration to dispose of ALL of my books and bookshelf over the summer without my knowledge. I lost hundreds of books! But I will not allow the actions of a few to adversely affect my students. Covid hit, I changed schools, and two years later, I have a solution!
I am on a mission to rebuild my classroom library and help foster a love of reading in my students.
Creating a class library is step one of my mission to get my students to read independently. These books have been chosen with my students in mind. Last year, I taught 9th grade and now I have moved with my students to 10th grade. I know they will love this selection of YA and graphic novels. Students will be able to choose books from our class library that interest them. Having a choice in what they read will help them enjoy independent reading time and encourage them to read more.
Everyone knows that the best way to increase reading ability is to read more. There are so many benefits to reading such as increasing vocabulary and improving comprehension. Both of these skills are beneficial for students of all ages, but especially my high school students who are preparing to enter "the real world" shortly. It is my goal that students will not only cultivate a love for reading but grow stronger in reading. Your support of this project will help change the lives of so many students. Thank you in advance for your donation.
