I Like Big Books and I Cannot Lie!

Help me give my students diverse books that convey BIG messages, life lessons, or themes, and individual book baggies to carry these books back & forth to school!

My Students

My students are the most caring, unique, and energetic students you will meet. All of my students are diagnosed with different disabilities, and many of them are English Language Learners (ELL) as well. They come from low-income families and receive free school breakfast and lunch. Despite all this, they are filled with curiosity and are always eager to learn. The students in my class love to engage in fun activities, especially those that are hands-on. My students also enjoy read-alouds and will become immersed in their own books when the topic interests them.

My Project

Most of my students do not enjoy reading, mainly because they are struggling readers. The first step I have to take as their teacher is to try to make reading more enjoyable for them. With this project, I am hoping to bring a diverse range of books to our classroom library that will spark memorable discussions, creating lifelong readers.

The majority of my students are from Latino/Hispanic backgrounds; I want to provide them with books not only from their culture but other cultures as well, so they are able to relate to these books and build a love for reading.

All of the books I have chosen convey BIG meanings, messages, life lessons, and themes that will resonate with my students. Some of the themes include: family, accepting who you are or what you believe in, celebrating diversity, spreading kindness, anti-bullying, and learning how to cope with the pandemic today. If they are reading or listening to these books, they will be thinking about how they can apply these lessons to their lives. The individual book baggies will help these books stay safe as the students will be traveling with them back and forth to school.
