About My Students

Xavier, Serenity, Alanah, Dylan and their friends are 7th grade students at an inner city school in a growing part of the south. They are ambitious, bright and energetic students that are eager to learn as much as possible about the world. Many students come to me daily at lunch for ELT (Extended Learning Time) voluntarily to get help and expand their knowledge.

When we read a novel earlier in the year, they wanted to annotate in the book. It belonged to the school and we only had enough books for each class to have one. They could not take the books home and certainly could not mark in them. The students all agree that it would help them tremendously to have the ability to mark in the books and be able to take them home.

After speaking with their friends that are on the other two teams in the seventh grade, the general consensus was that all of the students feel that having their own novel would benefit everyone.

Annotating is a permanent record of your conversation with the text. Through marking the text and writing notes, it’s a way for you to interact with, talk back to, and join in the conversation with the author and the work he or she created.

My students will "own" their book and will be able to retain and recall more information from the novel. By having the ability to annotate text, it forces us to be active and alert readers, rather than passive and disengaged readers. This is especially important when we’re reading something we don’t like or find boring. We will be able to have discussions with our fellow students about the things that we find while reading.

In Their Own Words

Our goal is to offer everyone in all of our classes different choices of the novels to read about The Holocaust. If we can choose, we will be more likely to read. It has been proven that reading choices improves test scores and we know it will improve ours greatly,

We are going to organize the books and create rules for all of the other students. If they take a book, they will sign a contract to read it and share with others what they have learned from reading the novel. They will also keep the book and read it.

It is important to have books. Many of our fellow classmates do not own any books or have any books at home. This will give each student in the seventh grade their own book to take home and keep. They can use it in high school and college for future.
