Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Research shows that students that have a quality arts education show improvement in academic areas. Our focus this year is to introduce our students to the arts by having extra encore classes that will introduce them to recorder playing, creative arts and dance class.

We are an urban school in a low income neighborhood.

Our school is 92% free and reduced lunch. Because of budget cuts our encore classes will be reduced. As a result of this our students will miss out on classes in the arts. This is unacceptable to the teachers in our school. We have decided that we will create courses that will introduce our students to new art based courses. Students will have classes in playing the recorder, intro to dance and creative arts class. I feel that through the use of the art-based classes my students will progress and grow in their academic classes.

My Project

All third graders will be able to attend recorder class. I have scheduled students so that everyone will be able to have one class during school hours and one class a week in the morning or in the afternoon. Students will have introduction lessons into how to properly play the recorder. Then students will be able to take the recorders home and practice in the hopes of perfecting songs that will earn them belts. There will be five belt levels: white, yellow, green, brown and black. Students will showcase at the end of this course the songs they have learn. Black belt students will perform all five songs in the showcase and be awarded a trophy, brown belt students will perform four of the songs and receive a certificate honoring their achievement. Color belts and number of songs will be as followed: green belt three songs and a certificate, yellow belt two songs and a certificate, white belt one song and a certificate. Students will take this new skill into other fields of study.

We have the most wonderful students, that would not receive art based course without your help.

We need the recorders requested in this project. Most of our students can't afford the cost of the recorders, so I look to you to help me provide this resource for my wonderful students.
