Help me give my students WhisperPhone Solos and Guided Reading Strips to help them stay focused and attentive as they listen to their own voice and self-monitor while practicing to become proficient readers.
I am blessed to teach second grade at a wonderful Title I school in northeast North Carolina. Our students are loving, hard-working, easily motivated, and care about each other and their success! They thrive on competitions and reaching goals set for them throughout the school year.
Our students get excited, work harder, and stay more engaged when they are given options and choices which makes them feel valued and that their interests matter!
We are a diverse school consisting of students and families from various backgrounds and cultures as well as Coast Guard families. They are each unique and have a special way of winning our hearts with their kindness and thoughtfulness. The students and staff at our elementary school have truly become a family to one another!
My Project
This will be my first year teaching second grade and I am so excited to see my students' growth and success in reading! These WhisperPhones will allow my students to be able to hear the sounds they are learning and reading and to connect to them with their spoken language and written text. All learning styles will benefit from the use of these WhisperPhones and reading guide strips as they will have a choice in choosing the book to read, a color tracker to use and will be more focused and engaged to read and write without so many distractions. The WhisperPhone Solo will allow for oral amplification of their own voice as they sound out words to read, spell and write. These phones will be used during our reading small group rotations and will play an important role in helping my students become more proficient and fluent readers.
These reading guides and WhisperPhones will help promote phonemic awareness, a critical reading element, in a fun and engaging way while helping my students build confidence in becoming more proficient readers.
My second graders will be much more focused on their independent reading as the guides will highlight the sentence they are reading while they will be able to cancel out all other noises and distractions to focus on listening to themselves read. The WhisperPhone Solo will allow them to read hands-free and enable them to be able to identify and also correct their mistakes in the event that they read something incorrectly.
