Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
About My Students
Ten girls participate in the “I Have A Purpose” college bound lunchtime group. The group leader, Heaven, leads the following 6th grade students: Robeyris, Ashante, Mishka, Alexia, Abigail, Sarai, Evelyn, Yazmani, and Rojanae. The students are learning about preparing for college. Their goal is to instill the idea of college in the minds of all students in the school. The students would like to get college banners from as many colleges and universities as they can to display throughout the school.
This project will help broaden the students' minds about college being a realistic possibility for the future. The students need to see that setting educational and career goals for the future is open to them. Having colleges on display will start the conversation about college amongst students in all grades. This project can be motivating for the students to want to be in school and help them to see that they can achieve and set positive future goals.
In Their Own Words
It will give the students choices of what we can become in life from which college we can pick. If the students see colleges they can start learning about the colleges and the academics they can learn in college. We don't know how far it can take us in life and it can help me discover myself.
I think it is fun doing online surveys about myself to think of what I want to do in life and figure out what college I want to go to. I want my classmates to pick a good career for them because that is important. I want my classmates to be able to pick majors or minors they are interested in.
Preparing for college helps you prepare for life. They need to work on budgets, narrowing down your college choices, plan to visit colleges, and become more responsible. This project will encourage the students to look towards what they will do after elementary and high school. The students need role models to look up to. They can pursue their dreams and never stop trying to achieve their goals. This project will help show them there is life beyond high school.
