My Students
I teach at a very special school in a large, urban district. What makes us special? Our students, of course! Our students love to read, and they read a lot.
These readers have read from a fabulous canon of fine literature.
They read from all genres. They have favorite authors. They discuss and write about their reading with a passion. They join me in a good cry at the end of a particularly sad read-aloud. These kids are crazy about books.
My Project
Reading aloud picture books to older kids is one of the ways I start to build relationships with my students. Every day, I share at least one picture book with the class. One purpose is to share a good story, of course, but it is so much more than just that. I want my fourth graders to remember how much FUN reading is. I want to build community by giving us shared experiences. But it is also a way for me to reach out to kids and make sure they feel seen.
I have a book for that!
This is my "go to" response. You are interested in space? I have a book for that. You feel like you are the only kid in the world who worries? I have a book for that. You like math and hate to read? You're in a fight with your best friend? You wear only pink and purple? You think nobody understands you? Well, you get the point. I want to have a book for everyone, every day. If you can see yourself and the world in the pages of a book, and you get to share it with trusted others? Well, that is a great start to a wonderful relationship.
These picture books will launch this school year in the best way possible. They will bring kids together around literature and help us build relationships that will carry us through the year.
