it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Being hungry in America is a serious problem. It is a problem that is so widespread, that I did not recognize it when it appeared in my own classroom.
I have heard it said, that some children only eat when they come to school, and this statement was proven earlier this week in my classroom.
This past Monday after the morning announcements, one of my students raised a hand and said she didn’t feel well. I sent her to the nurse to get checked out. On the way to see the nurse, my student threw up. The nurse told me that she asked her if there was food in the throw-up or was it just water. My student said it was only water. The nurse said she told her that this happened because you have no food in your stomach. I wanted to cry because this was my first experience with a student not eating dinner the night before and not eating breakfast the following day. I am asking you for your support to place snacks in my classroom so that my hungry children can go grab a Kind bar, or some breakfast cereal, chips or cookies... just something to fend off the hunger until lunchtime. The Ziploc bags will be used to package food for the students when they leave school so they won’t have to stay hungry and go without food in the night. The children will always have a food supply until they get to school the next day.
