Hello. My name is Mrs. Tannehill and I teach fifth grade in Middle Tennessee. My students come from low income households and many are English Language Learners. My students enjoy coming to school and are eager to learn. I am requesting these materials to help deepen my students understanding of some of our most challenging math concepts; fractions and decimals.
Teaching fifth grade math is challenging, yet rewarding.
Throughout the year my students are asked to apply their understanding of fractions and decimals to more complex ideas like multiplication and division. Students have a difficult time understanding these concepts. Using pictures, manipulatives, and other hands on activities increases student understanding.
When students are able to see what happens when a fraction is multiplied or divided the lightbulb in their brain lights up! I will be using these materials to make that happen. The fraction multipliers will help students visualize what happens when you multiply fractions. I will use the Fraction Discovery Cans in centers where students can apply their learning to a game like activity.
Since fractions and decimals go hand in hand, students often have a difficult time understanding decimals too. The math skills boards will help students visualize decimals in an engaging way. Everything is more fun when done on a white board! The Decimal Discovery Can and learning games will be used in centers where students can apply their understanding of decimals.
