My students need 32 chair organizers to slip over the backs of their chairs to neatly store and retrieve items such as folders, notebooks, and journals.
A typical day in our classroom is busy. Group work, individual study, thinking, reading, playing, and exploring new ideas sums up our day. Some days are traditional and other days it is obvious the 21st century has arrived. One constant every day: students and their needs come first.
My students attend a Title 1 school which means we are officially a low income school.
We are about 30% minority and 10% English Language Learners. Our district serves a semi-rural area of 300 square miles. My students may not have the off-school experiences that a more affluent student might experience but we attempt through field trips, assemblies and technology to provide to our students access to the greater world that other students may take for granted. Just like schools everywhere we have our hard workers, our dreamers, our artists, class clowns, sports giants, and students whose stories would bring tears to your eyes.
My Project
The chair organizers allow students to store softcover items on the back of their chairs in two open pockets for easy access. Every day, time is lost when students dig to the back of their desks to retrieve papers and, often when they are retrieved, they are in a a state of disarray and torn. With the washable organizers students will be better organized and more time will be spent on the task at hand, not reorganizing their desks. These organizers will be reusable for several years and will free up valuable desk space.
These chair material organizers, while not glamorous, will make a difference in my students' lives by providing organizational skills and generating more time to focus on learning.
Students will see that it is possible to keep items nice and to experience pride of ownership. It will keep their teacher happy also and a happy teacher is a productive teacher!
