My students need two Flip camcorders to record, edit and publish their speeches, debates, mock trials, model United Nations, moot court, and other academic performances.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The South Bronx has a reputation of poverty, crime, drugs, and failing schools. But our Debate Team has shattered these stereotypes. Our students devote themselves to daily practices starting at 7:00am, evening practices, tournaments every weekend, and camps every summer.
We are a Title I low income, public school in the South Bronx, one of the poorest congressional districts in the United States.
The majority of our students are on free lunch. Half of our students are Hispanic, and the other half are African American. We are located on the same block as the criminal courts and Bronx jail with a daily line of inmates coming and going. Our students have many obstacles to overcome including poverty, abuse, learning disabilities, medical conditions, and crime which is endemic.
From a cousin being shot, to a parent being jailed - every year it seems that each of my students has been personally affected by crime and violence either directly or indirectly. Despite these obstacles, we have managed to build one of the largest and most successful urban debate teams in the nation. This is unheard of for a Title I public school, and especially unheard of in the South Bronx where there no other debate teams.
My Project
We are asking for two Flip digital camcorders to support our debate team and students. Camcorders will benefit our students in many ways. First, they will improve debate skills; just as athletes review and critique tapes of themselves, students need to do the same with their presentations. The best way to see what you are doing wrong ... is to SEE what you are doing wrong! Second, camcorders will help us build community. Many of our students come from single parent homes where the sole parent is often working on weekends. It is very difficult for parents and guardians to attend debate tournaments which are all-day events. Therefore, by videotaping their debates, speeches, and mock trials - parents and families will always have a record of their scholars' work. Third, our students need 21st century technology skills. The majority of our students lack the skills to use a camcorder, produce, edit, publish and present video professionally. We want to change this.
Last year our school won the City Championships, beating some of the best schools in New York and the US.
The only way we can maintain our team is through DonorsChoose. Other debate teams enjoy lavish budgets of tens of thousands of dollars, or charge their students hundreds of dollars a month in fees. Nearly all of our students are on free lunch programs. Your donation will support 100 debaters a year, so they can debate like stars and reach for the stars. Thank you for your support!
