My students need a variety of books that foster social skills and classroom discourse through shared reading and eventually independent reading.

My Students
I am the Kindergarten teacher to 18 highly motivated students, ( well at least when they leave Kindergarten they are motivated). When they first arrive in Kindergarten some are crying, some are excited and some are just bewildered. It makes me giggle because a lot of my students did not come from a full day Pre-K program, so by 11:00 am when it's time for lunch a lot of my students think it's time to go home. Well, let me tell you the looks on their faces are priceless! Needless to say the first month and a half of school the students are still getting acclimated to the routines and structures of the classroom. By October Kindergarten is a well-oiled ship and the students are ready to learn!
My Project
These books will make a difference in my classroom because I will have a variety of books to add to my library for shared reading. When students hear reading consistently it increases their reading fluency. I use higher level books during shared reading to introduce ideas about social skills and to promote turn and talks among the students. The turn and talks increase comprehension and discourse.
When my students reach a certain reading level they begin to want to read the books that they have heard me read for shared reading.
The books that I read for shared reading are more themed based and introduce my students to a variety of vocabulary words that they would not be exposed to in a leveled A, B, or C book. By the third and fourth quarter of school half of my students are are reading at or beyond reading level C. The books that I am asking for will keep my students motivated, engaged and reading independently. By the third quarter of school my Kindergarten students are reading D and E leveled books so well that they are no longer telling me "I don't know how to read", because they do know how to read!
