Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are from one of the most impoverished and crime-ridden cities in the country, Camden, NJ. Many of them lack support at home and look to school as one of the few or only safe havens they know. I work with two of our school's most high-needs populations: Special Education students who have IEPs and English Language Learners who receive ESL services. Every day, they show up for school, ready to learn, despite whatever obstacles and challenges they faced the day before, at home or at school.
I strive to tailor my counseling sessions to meet each student's individual needs.
During our counseling sessions, I strive to teach them that there is a bigger world out there than the one they see every day; that they matter- and that they will always have a safe place to explore the world around them. I want to help prepare them for the next transition and chapter of their lives; whether it be middle school, high school, college, or the workforce. Every day my goal is to teach them appropriate coping skills that they can utilize in their everyday lives, in school and beyond.
My Project
When preparing for each counseling session; my goal is always the same- to make sure that I am targeting each individual student's areas that are most in need of support. In order to do that, I need workbooks such as The Social Success Workbook for Teens so I can focus each session on a small measurable goal, and hopefully watch each student build their level of comfort with their newly learned skills.
During the small group counseling sessions, the instructional materials, such as the My Heart Hurts: A Grief Workbook for Children and The Stress Reduction Workbook for Teens are utilized to effectively teach self-regulation skills, anger management, and mindfulness to the students on my caseload.
All my students receive individual and small group counseling support where they learn strategies to equip them with the skills necessary to be emotionally and behaviorally successful in and out of school.
I try my best to meet the emotional needs of all my students. In order to do this I need The Worry Workbook for Kids, The Bullying Workbook for Healing your Grieving Heart for Teens. All these items will help my students further develop their coping skills in order to successfully overcome their barriers inside and outside of school.
