My Students
This past school year, I worked with a group of phenomenal, hard working students. They were an energetic group that truly enjoyed learning and laughing together each day. Whether they were working as a team, or rolling solo, they were passionate about mastering anything that was thrown their way! Although my students varied in abilities as well as personalities, each one brought something great to the team. My students especially loved having the ability to choose where in the classroom they could play, read, and learn. Fortunately, my class gets the opportunity to loop into the next grade level together! Here is to another year of learning and growing together!
My Project
I'm a firm believer in keeping the focus on what's really important: the students. My idea of a successful learning environment is one that is crafted to increase student motivation and higher engagement. Over the years, I have found that students work best when they have control over the physical and mental conditions of where they are working. The beauty of flexible seating is that it takes students out of a formal desk setting, and lets them choose from a variety of seating options. These seating options include: beanbag chairs, wobble cushions, chair balls, bungee chairs, and even low tables with pillows on the floor. Students come from all walks of life, meaning not one child learns the same way another child does. This is why it is important to meet the needs of every child.
The fact is: Children need to move!
Flexible seating allows them to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand, which increases oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow and core strength. In turn, this burns more calories and increases metabolism. It also helps keep young minds more alert and focused. For example, some students are able to concentrate more on the task at hand if they are moving, not confined to one space. Having flexible seating such as beanbag chairs and wobble cushions allow students to bounce and move around while working. It helps calm their nerves and put them in a more nurturing and comfortable environment.
Our classroom is our second home. We spend endless hours a year learning and growing together! I currently have 4 different flexible seating options that students love. I would love to add more flexible seating options in order to make sure every student benefits.
