Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

If you are looking for a jewel of a school full of multicultural students who want to make a difference in their community and further their chances of getting a good education in the process, look no further, for we are that school! As the science teacher to bilingual and special Ed students in grades K-5, I have the opportunity to inspire a love for science and technology, and expose them to career choices they can achieve. These students have discovered they can make a difference in their community, from planting greenery to building a Peace Garden in memory of those who died in the World Trade Center. They are in love with learning and have discovered learning can be fun. I want very much to fan that flame.

When my students wanted to make a Peace Garden, we went to members of the community for supplies. We dug up plants from others who wanted to help us out. Strangers walked by, saw us struggle to lay pavers, and stopped to help us. We discovered many people did not believe we accomplished things by working together. I suggested that I could show them how to make a picture presentation that we could save and use to share with other people who wanted to know what we were doing. My students loved the idea of being able to show others what we had done, in hopes of inspiring others to do the same.

As I taught them how to create these presentations, we discovered our computers were too old to make power point projects and save them. We would like to have flash drives that we can save our projects on, creating a portfolio for each student to take with them as they graduate from our school. A class camera would document the things we do and help promote the positive things our students do within the community. Having a personal portfolio will increase the students’ chances for scholarships and college tuition, since they will have documentation of the work they have done. Our school simply does not have the funding for these things and I do not have the personal finances to provide them for my students.

By funding this project, you will ensure that these worthy students have a chance to compete in a global economy for career choices that will help to create a better world for the future. You will also help to keep that flame of “being in love with learning” alive and well. It is such a simple thing but it will make a dramatic difference in the lives of these students. They want to learn and they want to help. The things they learn today will impact a much larger community tomorrow. Please consider helping these students reach out for even bigger goals by giving them this chance to master the present.
