My Students

"If you want children to keep their feet on the ground, put some responsibility on their shoulders," Abigail VanBuren said and we apply this quote everyday. My students are responsible for book borrowing/returning on the library computer. We are in need of a newer monitor to make their job easier.

I am a teacher librarian at an elementary school that services many Navy and Army families in Hawaii.

The library is the center of encouraging literacy on our Preschool-6th grade campus. About half of the students at my school are military dependents who move locations every three years. I have a Library Club of 30 students who love volunteering in the library to keep it running smoothly. These students run the circulation desk and learn civic responsibility in helping their fellow students at school.

My Project

My Library Club students work the circulation desk in checking in and out books for classes and at recess. It is important that they see the words on the computer screen, so they know if a student has overdue books or if there is an error during the checkout process. In addition, students often want to borrow books and they don't realize they have books already checked out. A good circulation computer monitor is crucial to show the students exactly which books they have out. At present we have a bulky, old, small monitor which is difficult to swivel to show to the students. A flat screen larger HP monitor would make it much easier to remind the students of the books they previously borrowed.

Empower my students in using the computer at the circulation desk!

My Library Club students will checkout/in books more efficiently and will be more responsible in doing their job. Interacting with a computer in dealing with patrons/customers is a skill needed in many real life professions. Student library patrons will also have an easier time viewing their library accounts on the screen. They won't have to squint to see the titles of books they need to return.
