Help me give my students earbud headphones with a microphone for online learning.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
If you can believe it, they're actually eight year olds. They're funny, immature, good-natured, curious, eager, and sometimes even a little naughty. But they're eight, so it's ok. Even at eight, they want what everyone else wants, nice stuff! The school population is 30% Black and 70% Hispanic/Latino, and everyone qualifies for free breakfast and lunch.
They live in a neighborhood that doesn't offer them a lot of opportunity, yet does offer a lot of negative images.
So as an educator I try to provide them with as many opportunities and resources as I can to enrich their education and level their playing field. It is a reality that many of my students have the opportunity to become the first in their family to go to college and I would like their 3rd grade experience to be as positive and engaging as possible as they continue their journey.
So, everyone is learning online. With online learning, there comes many complications. One being that there are many students in the same room, on zoom at the same time as their siblings. This can be very distracting not only for the student, but also for the myself. When students are asked to unmute themselves, there is often so much background noise that either I can't hear them, or they can't hear me. It is also very difficult for students to concentrate.
Unfortunately, my students don't all have the option of having a quiet place to work.
Having students give virtual thumbs up or use the chat to respond is great, but even better is being able to hear their voices. Besides all students don't have the writing ability necessary to use the chat to respond. These headphones will allow my students to be more engaged while online. Students will also be able to exercise their voice more effectively because they will be able to be heard.
