My Students
Middle schoolers are amazing. They're young enough that they're still enthusiastic about everything and they're old enough to be aware that the choices they make every day will impact them in the future.
A big part of my job as a middle school teacher and librarian is building the skills of self-awareness and self-advocacy in each of my students.
I teach them to think about and understand what they need to be successful and how to get the supports they've identified.
Our school is a diverse grouping of students learning English as a new language, students with physical and learning disabilities, students from all five boroughs of New York City, and students from every socio-economic background you can imagine. What do all of these kids have in common? Each and every one of them can learn. Each and every one of them can be successful. Each and every one of them is cared for in our school. Each and every one of them is special to me.
My Project
Many of my school's students struggle with literacy skills. Some are learning English as a new language. Some have learning disabilities or speech delays. Many are reading far below grade level. The best thing for a struggling reader to do to improve in reading is to read - and read a lot.
Unfortunately, most struggling readers are reluctant readers.
Reading is hard, so it isn't enjoyable. As a librarian, I try to stock interesting and exciting titles in a wide range of reading levels. I've found that if I can get a reluctant reader to enjoy a book - just one book - I can get him or her to try a second and a third. Once I get a reluctant reader to read five books, he or she is hooked. Five books - that's all I need - five interesting, engaging, fun books.
What kind of books do the trick? Graphic novels. I'm always on the lookout for new graphic novels to expand our library's collection to appeal to more readers. can you help us expand our collection of quality graphic novels that will appeal to reluctant readers so that we can convert them into voracious readers?
