This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine a textbook that reads to you, being able to translate your spoken word into a dozen languages, creating cladograms, combining dangerous chemicals without safety concerns, and doing all this on a device no bigger than a pad of paper. The iPad can open a world of exploration for students.
My students are smart, funny, and curious.
As ESL students they come from many backgrounds, speak many languages, and face unique challenges. My students are enthusiastic learners, but are not proficient in English. This is understandable since they are all recent immigrants. I have Chinese, Spanish, Tagalog, Vietnamese, and Korean speakers in my class. We use plenty of realia to demonstrate academic ideas. When my students experience something new we learn together the vocabulary and language structures necessary to describe our experiences.
My Project
The iPad has all the features of a computer that make it such a great learning device, plus several additional features that truly make this a student's dream. The most salient feature its the ease of use first time users have with the iPad. It's menus and keys are intrinsic. My students will easily be able to navigate through the applications on an iPad without having to first learn an owner's manual. Students will use the Goggle Translate app to translate words and phrases back and forth into their native languages and English. They will use the read aloud books available to hear the proper pronunciation of new words, while still independently reading. They'll have access to dozens of current magazines and newspapers. Some of the most important apps we'll use are those which teach math concepts using manipulated graphics. This is a brilliant way to engage students with difficult concepts.
Students deserve to have the best opportunities available to them.
The iPad opens a world of experience that in previous generations was elusiveness. This device will help my students grasp material that would be difficult for most learners. Will you help make sure that none of my students fall behind?
