I Can Teach Better From Here

My students need an easel so that when they are sitting on the carpet ready to learn, I can be closer to them while I'm teaching my lessons.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a high poverty elementary school with close to one thousand students, that is located in a neighborhood that is settled in the middle of an industrial area. Aside from all of the trucks that rumble by, there is a high rate of crime in the surrounding area. All of the students receive a free lunch because of their socio-economic status. My students are faced with several challenges, both in and out of the classroom. They all are English Language Learners and many of them have learning disabilities. Despite the many challenges they face, they are always ready to learn, especially if I provide them with creative and meaningful learning experiences.

From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth.

Ben Franklin once said, "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." Seeing the excitement in kids eyes when they learn something new, makes teaching the best job ever. My students need as many hands-on experiences as possible in school, to enhance and reinforce their learning. There aren't many community resources outside of our walls available.

My Project

When my students sit on the carpet for mini-lessons, they are constantly having to look up while I chart on the whiteboard. This creates a lull at times that can be a bit of a distraction.

With this easel, I will be closer to the ground, which will help keep my students engage because they will be closer to me and to the lesson itself.

Being closer to them, will limit the time that I have to speak and it will give them more time for partner talk and independent practice.

The easel will also serve as a learning center, because my students will use it to practice their multiplication tables or to practice their spelling words. It will also be utilized by them when they make presentations to the rest of their classmates.
