Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at an amazing school full of wonderful students.
We are a PK-5 school with 450 enrolled students.
56% of our enrolled students are Hispanic and 41% are of African-American descent. 22% of our students have Individualized Education Plans. 15% of our student body is classified as English language learners. 22% of students reside in temporary housing.
An area of challenge at a school is our student attendance, but once the students get to the building, the magic happens! We are on an upward trajectory of growth as noted in our doubling of proficiency in our state math scores and steady increase in proficiency in our English Language Arts scores as well.
My Project
This school year we will be working to support students' social and emotional growth now that we are all fully back in the building after being split between remote and blended learning. Our school will not only aim to address academic gaps, but offer clubs and extracurricular activities that students missed out on last year. In the past we were able to do so in large groups in classrooms, however, because of COVID-19 and having to control our group's sizes, we have to hold groups in unconventional places- the cafeteria, gardens, outside- where we don't have access to outlets, desks, or technology. This iPad, keyboard, and Apple Pencil will help me bring our activities wherever we go!
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
