My 5th grade students attend an inner city NYC public school where 98.4% of the student population receive free lunch. They are a mixed population which includes students with IEPs and special needs. Many come from homes where they don't have quiet places to read or rely solely on the books from our classroom library to read for leisure. I try to supply them with the tools necessary to become life long readers, but fall short with vocabulary supplies since this is often overlooked but expected to get done through the content areas.
