I Can See Clearly Now!

My students need a collection of big books during shared reading time so they can develop early reading skills.

My Students

"I can't see the book" is what I often hear from my students when I read an average size book which isn't always appropriate for a large group of children. Big books are a helpful teaching aid to capture the attention of young readers.

I teach an Early Childhood Special Education program that services young children with disabilities.

The books in our classroom library are worn from extended use and unfortunately we only have a few big books in our collection. Funds are limited for my program so it's a challenge to replace some of their favorite books. The children in my class are eager to learn and I'm excited about the possibility of providing them with new resources.

My Project

With the use of big books, children can learn many early reading skills like concepts about print, letter sounds, and rhyming. The collection of books that I've selected for this project are high-interest for children due to their repeating and rhyming text. Using big books during circle-time will allow the children to enjoy the illustrations, connect spoken word with print, and stay engaged for a longer length of time.

With your help, reading time will continue to be an exciting part of the students day as well as a time to foster a love for reading.

Thank you in advance for all that you are doing in the lives of so many children in need.
