My Students

"I can't see! We have to sit criss cross applesauce." A common cause for concern in my classroom is the ability to see the work that I am modeling on the board. Our kindergarten students are learning what it is like to be in school, mostly for the first time.

Our students are truly some of the funniest and dedicated people I know.

Undeterred by factors constructed by society, (poor Pennsylvania school funding, affects of living in low-income urban neighborhoods, etc.) they look forward to the joys of learning. Not only are they learning academic content, but most importantly social skills like sharing and positive communication. They are fearless and take a leap of faith as they are exposed to new skills and obstacles.

My Project

While our students are joyfully learning new things daily, one of the challenges they face is the inability to clearly see what I am doing. When modeling phonics, math or writer's workshop lessons they struggle to see the page that I am working from. By purchasing a document camera, I could easily project what I am modeling, but more importantly, their work. They love to share their pieces and their methods as the class learns how to ask questions and provide feedback. In addition to the document camera, my students will benefit from the use of fully functioning speakers. The ones we are currently using are a set that I found in the back of a storage closet at school; unfortunately only one side works. They love to sing along throughout the day as we sing counting and phonics songs. Providing these speakers will allow them to hear the music more clearly and better understand the songs.

Kindergarten is a great time to develop students' love of learning.

Nothing should interfere with their desire and passion for learning, especially basic things like the ability to see and hear content clearly. We live in the age of technology where there are devices that could easily ameliorate these challenges. Please consider donating today.
