Today, it is not only important that our students learn to decode and have fluency, but they also need to comprehend what they read. So many children focus so much energy on learning to read that they miss all of the important skills needed to become lifelong readers and problem solvers. They need to be able to respond to what they read, be able to summarize and provide details, predict, make connections, identify story elements, describe characters and settings, and to sequence events. At an early age our students need various ways to practice these skills. It is important that we provide a print rich environment, as well as many types of challenging and inviting activities to give our students the opportunity to master these concepts. I feel that the Responding to Literature Activity Center, Reading Comprehension Games (students get excited about learning while they play games), Poetry Journals, and Another Point of View 2 in 1 Book Series(these books will lead to comparing and contrasting, predicting, and writing their own endings), will enhance my classroom environment and help to reinforce these skills in different formats. I will use these materials in a whole group setting, as well as during independent workshop time when students work on different levels reinforcing the skills that they need. I teach first grade at a suburban school in the West San Fernando Valley. I have mixed ability children in my classroom, ranging from highly gifted to students with identified learning disabilities. I need to provide on an ongoing basis differentiated instruction as well as remediation. These materials will help to give all my students the opportunity to be successful at their level.
