This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 17 kindergarten students are eager to learn and enjoy stories read to them and in need of having the necessary books readily available to continue learning from home. They come from a low socioeconomic background and in most cases come from homes where parents do not read to them, or do not have the means to access technology. My students live in an impoverished community in East Los Angeles. My students are from predominantly Latino backgrounds. They range from newly arrived immigrants to third-generation immigrants. I have students that do not have adequate resources to keep learning from home. The students that I work with are receiving free school lunches. Despite the challenges my students face, they are happy children who want to learn.
My Project
My students need a space in the classroom to learn and practice tracking print and develop language skills. With these resources, my students will have an opportunity to visit the center and practice their newly learned letters and words. The resources will support the development of early literacy skills such as left to right directionality, return sweep, one-to-one correspondence, spaces between words, and more. These resources will also help my students develop critical thinking and speaking skills with the picture cards. My students will have the opportunity to practice sentence building independently.
