My Students
"Every student can learn, just not on the same day or in the same way." - George Evans. Our challenge is to lead each child forward on their learning journey. Everyone is a star and deserves a chance to shine!
There is never a dull minute, as my class of 14 uniquely individual 5 and 6-year-old children are actively participating in our learning environment.
My class has diverse interests, learning styles, and developmental levels. We have students with a variety of educational backgrounds and needs which impacts our daily routines and learning tasks. We have worked hard to create a sense of classroom community and encourage friendship, trust, kindness, and compassion. We also strive daily to increase independence and problem-solving skills with each child.
Our district has a shared commitment for differentiated education, dedication to meet each child at their social, emotional, and academic level. We create a culture for learning in our community and school to reinforce skills throughout our day to support individual growth with high expectations to develop lifelong learners.
My Project
This school year has been unique and one of the most challenging in my 25 years. I have been fortunate to be with my kindergarteners in a face-to-face capacity all year and also offer a virtual option of my live classroom. This year we conducted more research on the best way to teach children to read with a systemic approach focusing on the “Science of Reading”. There is a sense of urgency with this as our students deserve the best instruction to help them on their journey to be great readers and writers. The work we have done explains the importance of offering decodable text to help provide strong phonics foundations and decoding automaticity for our early readers. This year we made a huge system change in our reading instruction to better support the development of literacy and focus more on a systematic approach over our balanced approach to instruction.

The importance of repeated practice to develop orthographic mapping, automaticity and fluency is crucial at this young age. At this point most texts I offer for school and home practice are predictable and easily read through picture cues instead of decoding. I am looking for a change and would love to offer our students more decodable practice options!
