My Students
My classroom is an Academic and Communication Support Classroom for students of varying abilities. I work with students with other health impairments, autism, specific learning disabilities, and severe speech language issues.
All of my students struggle with reading and are generally more than 2 grades behind their same age peers in the general education classrooms.
The students in my classroom persevere in spite of the difficulty reading. They find joy in looking at books and are excited when they are able to identify words in the text of the book.
My Project
The students in my academic and communication classroom struggle greatly with being able to read. We work on beginning reading skills for 2 to 4 years before they are able to "break the code" and begin to read. I would love to have in my classroom a variety of engaging texts they would be able to read on their own.
There is nothing more exciting than watching a struggling readers' eyes light up when they are able to pick up a book and read it.
These leveled books would give my students the opportunity to practice reading independently. These books will be a fabulous basis on which to build a class leveled library.
