Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I am now in my third year of teaching having graduated from the NYC Teaching Fellows program. I teach 2nd grade in East New York in school where 99% of the students receive free lunch. In the spring my second graders start becoming third graders and my job is to ensure that they are academically prepared for the transition. Last week I explained the idea of chapter books and watched my class begin to read. Then the magic happened - students began to pull out these chapter books throughout class time just to read. The previously ignored chapter books have become the most coveted books in the classroom. The students are inhaling the idea that they can read, bookmark their spot, and continue later. I smile that so many students are ready academically to read grade level books AND they feel confident enough to dive in and read. I am asking for additional books to supplement the chapter book area: Junie B. Jones, Horrible Harry, and The Magic Tree House, along with the orgizational tools to maintain the library system.
