This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I want to put 3 Franklin reading pens into the hands of our struggling readers. I work in a large urban district. At my campus over 90% of our students live below the poverty line. Their day-to-day struggles in life are daunting. When Learning Disabilities are added to their issues things can appear insurmountable. The time has come where technology can mediate so many of their troubles. Yet technology has a huge limitation. You have to be able to afford the equipment. Franklin has developed a hand held scanner that you slide over a typed word just like a highlighter. Once scanned the word appears on the side of the pen. Then at the press of a button the pen reads the word just like magic. Can you imagine how this tool could impact the life of a student who reads but has difficulties with multisyllabic words? No longer will he/she be dependant on others. No longer will this student just skip over words because they feel embarrassed to admit in front of their peers that they do not know a word. This child will no longer accept zeros on homework assignments just because there is no one at home who could help them. Let me insert a description of this tool. "Listen and learn - experience the world's only handheld scanning device specifically designed to enable users with learning disabilities to actually improve reading comprehension. The Reading Pen II is a revolutionary aid that retains a history of the last 80 words scanned for easy review and enables users to hear a single word or a full line of text spoken aloud in seconds. Reads or spells words or dictionary definitions aloud with built-in text-to-speech capability." With this tool the possibilities are limitless!
