Help me give my students a collection of stories to read and supplies (like chart paper, composition books, and EXPO markers) to keep them ready for success.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are from the most diverse part of Tampa Bay. Because of this, our population is made up of many English Language Learners. When they come into school, for most, it's their first time in school. It is up to us to make sure they get the best quality public education they deserve. My students are young, ambitious, and curious.
School is a time to explore and play, to imagine and create until the end of the day.
Our school is a Title I/Renaissance School. Most of our students are from low-income families which is reflected by our 91% free or reduced-price lunch status. Although my kids face socioeconomic challenges, they come to school every day willing to learn. I get the most satisfaction as a teacher when I see their faces light up when they finally understand something I'm teaching or when I read a book that they are interested in.
My Project
Do you remember the first book you read, that made you an avid reader? First impressions are very important. I want to create a great first impression of books, for my students, so they are able to appreciate and love quality books.
The ultimate goal is to turn them into life long readers.
I am requesting a wide variety of books so my kids can read wonderful stories in the classroom together, by themselves, and even take them home to add to their own library. For many, it may be their very first book at home. I truly believe children who read, grow up to be great thinkers. Every child may have their own preferred genre. Those who may seem like they do not like books just haven't found the right book yet. I want them to find that book in my classroom. I want them to take that book home and make it that one book that made them fall in love with reading.
When turning my students into lifelong readers they need supplies to respond to what they read. Paper for writing about that new book they just read, construction paper for making a picture of their favorite part or doing an art activity that goes with the story. Maybe they might want to write their own story and paint the scenery. Construction paper, writing paper, paint all things a child can use to be creative. By having needed supplies and books I will provide the golden opportunities for my students to enjoy reading and be creative.
