Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The current population of our school is 43% Hispanic. Many of these students come to us with no English literacy skills. Since they can not read what the other students in their class are reading, they sometimes feel that they are not as smart as their peers. We try to emphasize that they are becoming bilingual and that is a fantastic skill that most people do not have. These students are really hard workers and they strive to learn their new language, but sometimes they need an opportunity to read books in their first language just for the joy of reading. They often tell us, " I can read in Spanish." I want them to be able to do that as much a possible. We need more Spanish and bilingual books in our school. We want students to continue to grow in their first language as they make progress with their English.
