My middle school students are learning French. Reading is one of the four domains of learning a language along with listening, writing and speaking. I am requesting a year subscription to Allons-y magazine published by Scholastic.
These magazines are written at the novice level and have highly engaging articles that immerse students in the language and culture of French-speaking countries.
The articles use vocabulary that students have learned in the classroom, but they also provide a glossary for a few higher level words which can expand students' knowledge. The array of articles is very interesting to students covering topics such as sports, fashion, and music. Students get excited when they can personally relate to topics they're reading about.
Books can be overwhelming and intimidating to novice learners, but short, interesting magazine articles can pique students' interests and build their confidence in reading French. I have built up my library of books for my primary students, but it's much harder to find reading materials for my middle school students which are at their reading level in French, but aren't "baby books." These Allons-y French magazines will provide my students with something to help them practice their reading skills, but are at their maturity and age-appropriate level.
