I Can Now Read the World Through My Computer Screen
Help me give my students access to technology. Using the laptops will give them the experience and knowledge that other students are fortunate to have.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students rely on the school for most of their daily needs.
My school is located in the Bronx, in the poorest congressional district in the nation.
We have a 100% free breakfast and lunch program. During Thanksgiving, our families receive free turkeys. During the winter holidays students receive outside donations such as coats, boots, school supplies and toys. Most students read below their grade levels which also affects their performance in other subjects. Our limited resources makes it difficult to help students reach their academic goals.
My Project
Too many of our students read below grade level. Some of these students participate when I'm modeling through the mini lessons however, they struggle to work with a partner and especially when its time to work independently.
Learning to identify letters and sounds, and sight words using websites such as Starfall.com and Fundations, will help support students learn to read.
These computers I'm asking for will be placed in a center in the classroom where the students can work independently on mastering letters, sounds, sight words, and reading books on their levels, privately. Many of these students are embarrassed about their reading levels so working on these skills privately is very important to them.
Unfortunately, my students do not have computers at home so working on these foundational skills at home is not an option. It has to be done at school and it is important to me that they feel comfortable.
